About Coldwater Conservation Area

Coldwater Conservation Area is located in Lawrence County, Missouri, and spans over 3,300 acres comprised primarily of oak-hickory forest, open grasslands, and a man-made lake known as Coldwater Lake. Acquired and managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, the area provides important habitat for native wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various migratory birds. The terrain features rolling hills, small streams, and a variety of forest types that support a rich ecological diversity. Recreationally, the area is popular for hiking, birdwatching, fishing—especially in Coldwater Lake created by damming Dry Wood Creek—and seasonal hunting. The lake offers fishing for species such as largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, making it a favored destination for anglers. Trails wind through the forest and around the lake, offering scenic views and opportunities for wildlife photography during all seasons. Camping facilities are limited, focusing on primitive tent camping, providing a quiet and natural experience. The area’s history as a managed conservation site reflects Missouri’s dedication to preserving natural habitats and promoting outdoor recreation. Visitors appreciate the peaceful environment, the chance to spot diverse wildlife, and the balance between forest and aquatic ecosystems that support both passive and active outdoor pursuits.
